# What is a policy year?

## The policy year is always the full year (365/366 days) up to the ‘policy end date’ stated on your insurance policy.

> **Example:** The end date on your insurance policy is 31 November 2027. Your policy year is therefore 1 December 2026 – 31 November 2027.

A policy year can never be longer than 365/366 days. However, in the first year after taking out the policy, the policy year may be shorter than 365/366 days. This happens if, when taking out the policy, you specify that your annual excess and your sums insured should always reset on a specific date.

> **Example:** You take out a policy on 15 May, but specify at the time of taking out the policy that your annual excess and your sums insured should always restart on 1 January. We issue you with a policy running from 15 May to 31 December, so your next policy year – and with it your annual excess and your sums insured – will restart on 1 January. The next policy year will then, as normal, last 365/366 days, running from 1 January to 31 December.

**Important:** Even if your first policy year is not a full year of 365/366 days, the annual excess and the sums insured apply in full and not on a pro rata basis. This means that even if your contract year is shorter, you will still pay the full annual excess yourself, but you will also be covered by the full sum insured. It makes no difference whether your first contract year lasts one month or 11 months.
